Renowned Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of parallel cinema, passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 90. He had been battling chronic kidney disease for several years, and his condition had recently deteriorated. Benegal breathed his last at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. He is survived by his wife, Nira Benegal, and daughter, Pia Benegal.
